Thanks to our own residential area in the modern ASB community and care centre Herne-Mitte, the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund is able to dedicate its time and efforts to a group of residents that were not used to receive sufficient attention and care in inpatient care units: Young people who are in need of care due to an accident or a neurological disease. Today those affected can barely receive long-term care in hospitals and it is also almost impossible to care for them at home. And still, their needs and wishes differ from those residents living in a typical inpatient geriatric care facility. The ASB has now created an environment and a residential area offering for example modern internet connections, where young people in need of care can be provided for with optimal care and looked after in an appropriate manner. This includes a specifically structured leisure programme with trips to sport events, cinema or barbecue evenings. Also the members of care staff have been thoroughly selected and trained in order to come up to the necessities of the younger people in need of care and to meet the requirements of the demanding therapy approaches. Communication with relatives is an essential component of the work in the special care unit for young people in need of care. Very often the relatives have had long-standing experience in caring for the young persons and can, at their own request, become a decisive component when it comes to all-round care. At the same time relatives themselves will need and receive support and guidance as well as an excellent connection to doctors, care professionals and the management of the facility. The residents living in the special care unit for young people in need of care do not only come from Herne, but from the entire Rhein-Ruhr region. Some are directly transferred from special clinics or rehabilitation facilities to the ASB-house, thus ensuring a direct and professional care provision following the discharge from a clinic or a rehab facility.
